It’s time to make Mexico a state

I have an idea to solve the illegal immigration problem once and for all. Have Congress petition Mexico to vote to become a state. Before you laugh, hear me out. Everyone would automatically become a citizen.

If we were like Russia a while back, we would just send in some troops and a few tanks and, presto, we would own Mexico. But being a bit more democratic than Russia, we should follow a peaceful solution.

I feel positive the ordinary people would vote for it, as they literally are dying to get to the states.

The drug lords and probably the politicians would oppose it, for it would dry up their illegal gotten gains.

Canada seems to get along nicely with a multi-language system. In the new states we would teach both English and Spanish.

Their economy would slowly merge into ours. We would have access to thousands of miles of shoreline, minerals galore, timber and a buffer against the rogue countries of South America.

Look, I know this is outside the box, but after thousands of lives and billions of dollars and miles of fences, nothing has worked. I think this has go to be better.

Many agencies not in Constitution

In the Dec. 15 editorial titled, “Does the Constitution say…?”, you argue against the legality of the mandatory insurance purchase provision of the Patient Protection and Affordability Care Act. Your reasoning is that this specific power is not granted to the federal government in the Constitution.

I agree with you, but I wanted to ask you does the Constitution allow the federal government to require us to pay into Social Security?

Does it allow for the creation of the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Veterans Administration, the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board, the National Park Service, Oak Ridge National Laboratories, the National Aeronautics and Space Agency, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Centers for Disease Control just to name a few?

I can’t find anywhere in the Constitution where it allows for the creation of these agencies through mandatory payment of our taxes.

Yes, the federal government is too big, but if specifically being spelled out in a 200-plus-year-old document is the criterion for a federal program’s existence, then I ask you, “Are you prepared to abolish all of the agencies I just mentioned?”

Pets need a home for Christmas

The cats and dogs at the Pet Placement Center are dreaming of a forever home, one they can call their very own!

With children’s laughter, hoping all their dreams come true.

Santa reads his list, “A cat for the Smiths, a dog for the Joneses;” now that’s what I call a happy home!

So if you still have room on your list, come to the Pet Placement Center and find a forever friend.

So Santa, hear their prayers – a home forever and someone to care!

Ho, ho, ho – Santa’s at their door.

The Pet Placement Center is Chattanooga’s only no-kill shelter. We keep a wonderful home for the pets through donations and fundraisers till they find their forever home!

Your donations are much appreciated.
