A Dodds Avenue apartment fire this afternoon has left several people without a home.
No injuries were reported.
Responding to an alarm, four Chattanooga fire companies responded about noon to a house at 3110 Dodds Ave. that had been split into four apartments.
Capt. David Barie said smoke was showing from Apartment B as the first firefighters arrived. Flames had penetrated the interior walls and were getting into the attic before the firefighters could get the blaze under control, he said.
Most of the fire damage was contained to the one apartment unit and the attic above, but there was smoke and water damage to adjacent units, Capt. Barie said.
Fire investigators say the cause of the fire appears to have been accidental, with a couch sitting too close to a wall heater.
The American Red Cross are assisting those displaced by the fire. Fire officials were unclear Thursday evening how many people had been displaced.
