UNC Greensboro is going to win a men’s basketball game sometime soon.
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Mocs just hope that isn’t today in the Greensboro Coliseum.
The Spartans are 0-13 but have faced six Atlantic Coast Conference schools. UNCG’s three Southern Conference losses have come against teams that are a combined 7-2 in the league: Wofford, Furman and Samford by four points on Thursday.
“There’s a whole lot of teams in this country that would be winless with the schedule they’ve had,” UTC coach John Shulman said. “It’s brutal.”
Said Mocs point guard Keegan Bell: “Greensboro is a good young team that wants to get that victory. They’re definitely hungry and it’s going to come, but hopefully it’s not going to happen against us.”
The Mocs have an overall record of 7-8, but they’re 3-0 in SoCon games and lead the league’s North Division.
“It’s good to start 3-0 and we’re in first, but we have to play out our string of games,” Bell said Friday before climbing on the bus to Greensboro. “We’ve put Monday behind us.”
UTC played one of its two worst games of the season Monday in an 89-57 loss at Austin Peay. The Mocs played so poorly that Shulman didn’t bother viewing the video with his squad.
But that loss doesn’t count in the SoCon standings.
“We have all the confidence of winning the North, so we have to play like that,” DeAntre Jefferson said. “We know what we did wrong. We admitted that we made mistakes and we know what they are.”
Like UTC, the Spartans are heading into the meat of their SoCon schedule. It began Thursday with a 68-64 loss to Samford in the Coliseum.
“Even though we kind of feel like we’re starting over, we’re not,” UNCG coach Mike Dement said. “We’ve yet to feel a win, and getting that is the hardest thing.”
