Brainerd group organizes for year

Nearly six years after the effort to revitalize the Brainerd area began, a small group of focused individuals is still working hard to make it a reality.

GrassROOTS midTown, formally called the MidTown Revitalization group, meets monthly to discuss the future of the area between the Missionary Ridge Tunnel and the Chattanooga Airport.

At February’s meeting, members set the stage for big projects in the area – everything from encouraging businesses to participate in a design overlay project, to planning a festival for the surrounding neighborhoods.

Currently the group is working on encouraging businesses to participate in a Regional Planning Association project to serve as a “best practices” demonstration for zoning overlays in the area, said Chattanooga City Councilwoman Carol Berz, who represents the area.

“So right now we’re working on asking businesses for their right-of-ways, because in this area the city doesn’t own them,” she said.
