Four performances of the Tony and Drama Desk award-winning play “Red” will be presented at Barking Legs Theater, 1307 Dodds Ave., Friday-Sunday, Aug. 30-Sept. 1.
“Red,” a play by American writer John Logan, is about artist Mark Rothko. It was first produced in London in December 2009. The original production starred Alfred Molina as Rothko and Eddie Redmayne as his fictional assistant, Ken.
The production, and its two leads, transferred to Broadway in March 2010. It was the 2010 Tony Award winner for Best Play. Additionally, Redmayne won a 2010 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play.
In the play, master abstract expressionist Mark Rothko has just landed the biggest commission in the history of modern art: a series of murals for New York’s famed Four Seasons Restaurant.
In the two years that follow, Rothko works feverishly with his young assistant, Ken, in his studio on the Bowery. But when Ken gains the confidence to challenge him, Rothko faces the agonizing possibility that his crowning achievement could also become his undoing.
In this local production, Rothko will be played by Dan Buck and Nathan Tullos is cast as Ken.
Raw and provocative, “Red” is a portrait of an artist’s ambition and vulnerability as he tries to create a definitive work for an extraordinary setting.
This play is recommended for ages 13 and older. The performance is 80 minutes with no intermission.
Performances are set for 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with 2:30 p.m. matinees on Saturday and Sunday.
Tickets are $15. They may be purchased online at https://redbyjohnlogan.brownpapertickets.com/
