The Lee University Symphonic Band will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Lee’s Conn Center, 150 11th St., NE, in Cleveland, Tenn. The ensemble will do an eclectic program of concert band classics along with selections they present in worship and ministry events at churches across America.
The program, titled “The Power of the Text as Inspiration — Meaningful Music,” features works in which the composers and arrangers have used famous hymns, poems or other verse as inspiration for their compositions. Examples include James Curnow’s “Where Never Lark or Eagle Flew,” David R. Gillingham’s “No Shadow of Turning,” based on the famous hymn “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” and Claude T. Smith’s “Eternal Father Strong To Save.”
The 2010 Lee University Symphonic Band is made up of 60 musicians representing 16 majors. Several are former all-state band participants in Tennessee, Ohio, Virginia, Georgia and Alabama. Dr. Mark Bailey, a professor of music, is in his 21st year as the conductor of the ensemble.
Admission to the concert is free. For more information, contact the School of Music at 423-614-8240 or by e-mail at music@leeuniversity.edu.
