A 63-year-old man is dead in Catoosa County after he was hit by a train while trying to drive through a railroad crossing on Graysville Road.

Georgia State Patrol Corporal Mitchell Moss said the man was driving north on Front Road in a black, 2016 Camaro when he passed several stopped cars and turned left to cross the tracks.

He said the man drove around the traffic arms which were down to signal a train was coming, but didn’t make it across in time and the train collided with the center of the driver’s side.

The car became attached to the front of the train and was pushed over 1400 feet before it could be stopped. The driver died on scene from injuries sustained in the crash.

Mary Tanner said she was coming home from her mother’s house in Graysville and was stopped at the intersection when she saw a black car pass from behind her in the opposite lane of traffic.
