Super-speed Internet a goal for Northwest Georgia

CALHOUN, Ga. – Board members with the Northwest Georgia Regional Commission say a lot is still up in the air for 2011, but one goal is to break ground on a network of high-speed fiber lines to give Northwest Georgians the same cutting-edge Internet speed as Chattanooga.

Chattanooga has the fastest Internet in the country through an EPB fiber-optic network capable of handling 1 gigabit of information per second.

During a presentation today in Calhoun, Greg Laudeman, from Georgia Tech, said the company laying the fiber lines hopes to get started this spring.

The network would connect communities such as LaFayette, Summerville, Trenton, Calhoun and Cartersville to the main fiber artery running from Miami to Chicago.
