TFP cartoon shows hypocrisy

At the risk of the TFP cartoonist calling me a callous jerk, I must nonetheless observe that some Americans would press Lady Liberty to abort her own children and sell them for parts while forcing her to adopt the offspring of Latin America instead. They would keep our laws off her body while allowing the lawless to violate her borders at will.

While the rest of us are making America great again, will someone kindly send your cartoonist a “Please tread on me” T-shirt?

Protect Americorps funding to benefit all

In June, the House and Senate appropriations committees approved separate spending bills that would reduce opportunities for young people to serve their country by cutting the AmeriCorps program by as much as 34 percent.

These cuts mean half as many AmeriCorps members serving with local programs like Southeast Conservation Corps whose members build local trails, remove invasive species and complete fire mitigation projects in Tennessee and surrounding areas. Nationwide, AmeriCorps members make all the difference in overcrowded classrooms, understaffed health clinics and tutoring programs that lower dropout rates. Thousands of AmeriCorps members have been some of the first to our nation’s largest disasters including Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Sandy, and the Joplin and Moore tornadoes.

It seems impractical to reduce an agency which can help people stabilize their lives in times of crisis. AmeriCorps members do not make partisan judgments on who to respond to, they just go help.

I encourage fellow Tennesseans to join me in calling on their members of Congress to protect AmeriCorps.

Chelsea Steck, Southeast Conservation Corps

Stay vigilant against enemies

We were attacked by our cowardly enemy, yet again.

We lost five more of our brave military. Sons. Brothers. Husbands. Fathers. We have mourned. We have honored the fallen. We have buried our loved ones. Now, it is time for this city and our nation to commit to the task at hand – to protect our military and all our citizens.

Our enemy is clear. They have openly declared war on us: It is radical Islam. We as citizens must remain vigilant and our elected officials must remove any bureaucratic obstacles that hamper the protection of Americans of all races and religions.

We as a united America must petition the one true God for his protection of our country: “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their evil ways, then I will hear them from heaven, and forgive their sins, and will heal their land.” II Chronicles 7:14
