Mohawk will close its spun yarn plant in Laurel Hill, N.C., by Aug. 22, resulting in the loss of 197 jobs, according to textile industry trade publications. Representatives for Mohawk did not return calls seeking comment.
Mohawk, along with the rest of the carpet industry, has seen demand for spun and stapled yarn fall off, while demand has risen for filament yarn-based products, which are made in more modern plants.
