The Volkswagen Group reported today that its global sales edged up slightly in January with increases in the United States but falling deliveries in South America and Russia.

The group, which includes Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche among its 12 brands, posted sales of 817,600 units, or up just 0.7 percent last month compared to a year ago.

Sales jumped 6.1 percent to 39,900 in the U.S. last month and were 9 percent higher in North America.

VW is expanding its Chattanooga assembly plant, plowing $900 million into the project with plans to hire another 2,000 employees to produce a new midsize sport utility vehicle in late 2016.

However, sales of 13,800 vehicles in Russia were down 16.9 percent. South America sales were off 20.7 percent, the German automaker said.

China, the group’s biggest individual market, posted sales of 344,500, up 2 percent.
