WASHINGTON (AP) – House Speaker Paul Ryan’s advice for young Republicans discouraged by the GOP’s top two presidential contenders: Focus on ideas, not the candidates.

The Wisconsin Republican offered that less than rousing defense of billionaire Donald Trump and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz during a 70-minute session Wednesday with students at Georgetown University.

One junior said he is a Republican and has been dismayed by the election. Ryan drew laughter by responding, “Why is that?”

The student then said he isn’t supporting Trump and Cruz and asked for reasons for optimism about the race.

Ryan said that, unfortunately, he’d heard that question before.

The House speaker urged the student to look to the campaign platform the GOP will write at this summer’s convention and at policy proposals House Republicans are producing.
