One of the area’s most prolific coaching partnerships ended after more than two decades late last winter when Baylor’s Jim Morgan announced his retirement.
Morgan and assistant Schaack Van Deusen had combined their talents and philosophies in a highly fruitful and respected program. They thought alike with regard to demeanor and sportsmanship, yet one was most often cool and calm while the other exuded a fiery competitiveness.
“Coach Morgan is a wonderful person and I can only hope to be as good a person,” said Ben Nelson, the assistant who was elevated to the head coaching position with a full endorsement of Van Deusen.
Former Michigan State wrestler Rex Kendle now is the other assistant besides Van Deusen.
Into his first full season as the Red Raiders’ third head wrestling coach – Luke Worsham was the first – Nelson has made few noticeable adjustments.
