Covenant College Theatre will open William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” Thursday, Nov. 1, for five performances over two weekends.

The play’s plot revolves around questions of power, revenge, justice and mercy.

It is set on a remote island, where Prospero, a sorcerer and Duke of Milan, plots to restore his daughter, Miranda, to her rightful place by using illusion and skillful manipulation. Prospero conjures up a storm, the tempest, to cause his brother, Antonio, and the complicit King Alonso of Naples to believe they are shipwrecked and marooned on the island.

Peter Upton is cast as Prospero.

“We really have an obligation to live up to the fact that Prospero is able to do amazing things with his magic, and to present a feast for the eyes and ears,” says director Claire Slavovsky.

This production will contain original music by John Reeder.

There will be a question-and-answer session with some of the cast and crew after the Friday, Nov. 2 performance, and a faculty discussion panel after the matinee on Saturday, Nov. 10.
