Urban Spoon, 207 Frazier Ave., is the kind of place where unexpected twists have come to be expected. Each dish is a play on tradition, from the chicken salad, made with smoked chicken and water chestnuts, to the meatloaf salad enhanced with blue cheese and bacon.
The most popular entree of all is the meatloaf.
“I think it’s the smoked tomato sauce on top that people really like — they rave about it,” said owner Charla Filter.
The meatloaf is served with green beans and mac and cheese, which is made with bacon, sausage, tomatoes and several pounds of cheese, bound together with mushroom soup. The green beans, possibly the only dish without a different edge, are seasoned to Southern perfection.
“People know us as Southern contemporary because we use grandma’s recipes and add a twist to them,” Filter said.
