The third annual Scared Pink fundraiser will be held Saturday evening at Loose Cannon Gallery in the Southside. The event raises money for Pennies for Vicki, a nonprofit organization that offers financial assistance to people fighting cancer.

Many people who are diagnosed with cancer find themselves financially strapped, said Misty Mayo, who co-chairs the event with her husband, Perry Mayo.

“Pennies for Vicki was started by Alex Connor in memory of his wife, Vicki Connor, who died from breast cancer,” Mayo said. “His wife worked for Citadel Broadcasting and was well known and loved in the Chattanooga area.”

The event raises money to help patients pay an electric bill, a rent payment or buy groceries, Mayo said. “The money goes where it is needed the most.”

Mayo, 51, who was diagnosed more than a decade ago with breast cancer, now has terminal cancer. “It came back in my bones and now my brain,” she said. “A year ago, the doctors thought I wouldn’t make it six months. I’m going down kicking.”

Guests are asked to dress in costume for the fun-filled Halloween celebration.

“There will be cash awards for up to $500 for the best costumes,” Mayo said. “We’ll also have a DJ, dancing, an open bar and hors d’oeuvres.”
