An artist making her debut at River Gallery and a returning sculptor whose work has been showcased in the Sculpture Garden will be featured in the gallery’s June exhibit, “Inside/Outside.”

Alabama artist Karen Rouse uses strong directional lighting to create distinctive shadows in her acrylic paintings. She will debut a body of figurative paintings in the gallery.

Using an acetylene torch, Russell Whiting of Louisiana carves large-scale figures primarily influenced by classicism. Pieces of his work in the Bluff View Sculpture Garden have included the memorable Icarus sculpture that appears to be jumping off the bluff.

The two artists will be honored with an opening reception at the gallery, 400 E. Second St., on Friday, June 2, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

“We will begin the reception for both inside, then the group will stroll to the Sculpture Garden to see Russell’s sculpture,” says Angie Supan of River Gallery. “Russell will have work inside and outside, he will bring sculpture for the garden and smaller pieces for the gallery. Karen is in the gallery.”

The exhibit in the gallery will remain on view through June 20. Whiting’s pieces outside will remain on view through May 30, 2018.
