Chattanooga firefighters combatted a duplex fire in Hixson that resulted in the injury of the single resident.

Bruce Garner, a spokesman for the Chattanooga Fire Department, broadcasted live on social media app Periscope from the scene showing a brick duplex in the 4700 block of Forest Wood Lane that had sustained heavy damage. The flames had burned a large hole through the roof and still illuminated a large column of billowing smoke as Garner broadcasted.

The one man who was home reported to authorities he observed smoke and fire before escaping and he suffered a laceration to the arm while trying to leave. He has since been treated by HCEMS and transported to a local hospital.

Garner said the origin of the fire is unknown, but by the time responders arrived the blaze had already been raging for some time, making it difficult for them to contain it initially.

Just before the short broadcast cut out, it showed several firefighters blasting a stream of water through the front door of the home and hacking through an adjacent wall with an axe.

Garner said, “It’s hard work and it’s dangerous work sometimes.
