BLACKSBURG, Va. – There were some close matches, but sixth-ranked Virginia Tech simply had too much firepower Sunday afternoon for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team.
They overwhelmed the Mocs 29-6, limiting UTC to a pair of wins – Chris Debien (133 pounds) and Justin Lampe (165). Each won by decision.
The close matches included 184-pound Bryce Carr’s 2-1 loss to 10th-ranked Zack Zavatsky and 197-pound Clay Dent’s 6-1 setback to third-ranked Jared Haught.
All six of Virginia’s top 10-ranked wrestlers were winners, including No. 2 Ty Walz, who bested Mocs heavyweight Jared Johnson 13-7, and No. 2 Zach Epperly, who posted a major decision over UTC 174-pounder Sean Mappes.
In all, Virginia Tech had four bonus-point matches.
The Mocs travel to St. Charles, Mo., next weekend for the Lindenwood Open. Their next home match is against Virginia at 2 p.m. on Dec. 4.
