A 39-year-old man was found suffering from a gunshot wound early Tuesday in Cherokee County, N.C., where deputies answered a report of a domestic situation in the Topton community.
So far, there are no charges as the investigation continues. Topton is in North Cherokee County at the Graham County line.
Cherokee County Sheriff Derrick Palmer said in statement issued Wednesday that deputies answering the call around 7:30 a.m. were informed there might be someone inside the home who had been shot.
“Once on scene the arriving deputy was able to determine that a 39 year old male had been shot and required medical attention,” Palmer said.
Emergency medical service crews took the unnamed man to be flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, he said.
“The investigation continued late into the afternoon, as several individuals were interviewed and search warrants were completed at the residence,” Palmer said.
When completed, evidence gathered in the investigation will be forwarded to the district attorney’s office for further review, he said.
“At this time I will not comment further concerning this investigation as it is ongoing. I can say that we are not looking for any additional persons of interest in this case,” Palmer said.
The sheriff praised his officers and emergency medical crews.
“The team work displayed today between law enforcement and emergency services is outstanding and we appreciate the level of professionalism displayed by all today,” he said.
