DOVER, Tenn. (AP) — A Tennessee man who reportedly shot at deputies died when three returned fire, officials said.

The shooting happened Saturday night in Stewart County when deputies responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said in a statement.

Deputies made contact with Billy Joe Reynolds, 43, who was armed and “making suicidal comments,” the statement said. Deputies were awaiting specially-trained officers to work to diffuse the situation when Reynolds reportedly shot in the direction of deputies and three of them returned fire, killing him, the bureau said. No deputies were injured.

Bureau agents continue to investigate the shooting.
