Council talks whacking agencies

City Councilwoman Pam Ladd has a suggestion for the council: Give $2 million to United Way of Greater Chattanooga for charitable contributions and keep $3 million now proposed to go to other agencies in the city budget.

Another $10 million would go to funding city-supported agencies that absolutely need money, she said Wednesday.

“We quit talking about it, and we save a bunch of money,” she said.

The City Council spent Wednesday morning discussing how to make cuts to city-supported agencies. Those agencies are scheduled to receive a little more than $14 million under Mayor Ron Littlefield’s proposed 2010-2011 budget.

The council talked about a wide range of options for cuts, including giving money to United Way to divvy out, cutting spending to jointly funded county and city agencies and slashing 5 percent of the agencies’ budgets across the board.
