Vote for Cagle in Soddy-Daisy

My husband and I have lived in Soddy many years and we raised our daughters here. We are both retired and live on a fixed income, so every dollar must be spent with care and make sure we need the service or product.

This election in our city we can elect a woman to take care of us as she spends our money as a commissioner. I know she will be wise in doing this, because she was wise helping us when she worked at the bank and she was always helpful.

Janice Cagle and her husband Doyle are fine people and care about our city. Vote for Janice for commissioner of Soddy-Daisy, Nov. 2.

Not all seniors living ‘high-end’

In reading your story on Monday (Oct. 11) about Social Security, it occurred to me that a lot of your readers probably thought “so what, I didn’t get a cost-of-living increase.”

What most people don’t realize is that Medicare payments come out of Social Security payments. So most of the Social Security checks were between $100 to $150 less this year, leaving many of the very elderly already living below the poverty level.

While their utilities, taxes, food and drugs have increased in price along with ours, their income has decreased and will again in the coming year.

So I hope that instead of thinking that all seniors are living a “high-end” retirement, give thanks for your blessings and perhaps silently say “There but for the grace of God go I.”

America, it’s time to vote wisely

America is in the worst depression since the great one of 1929. More than 14 million people are out of work. Many cities and states are in serious fiscal crisis. Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid are on the brink of meltdown. Because of underfunding, many private and public retirement plans are in jeopardy.

Our national debt is expected to be $14 trillion by the end of 2010 and $20 trillion by 2020. Someone has figured if you start right now and counted one number per second, it would take 31,688 years to count to a trillion. That isn’t piggy bank money.

America is like a fast runaway train with its brakes shot and throttle stuck. If not stopped, it will be a crash heard around the world. No nation will be around to pick up the pieces. Most of them are in the same shape we’re in and the rest would be glad we got what we deserve.

We are facing the worst long-term debt-and-deficit crisis in our history. Unless this trend is reversed, we could become another third world nation or a large banana republic.

Can we make a change? Yes, there’s still the ballot box. Let’s us it wisely.
