LAKEVIEW-FORT OGLETHORPE WARRIORS

Head coach: Bo Campbell (18-42 here; 22-58 overall)

Returning starters: 5 offensive; 5 defensive

Last year’s record: 1-8, did not qualify for playoffs

Key players: Will Carroll (6-0, 185) Sr. QB/WR/DB, Taylor Frady (6-0, 275) Sr. OL, Slade Blankenship (6-2, 330) Sr. OL, Trevon Gott (6-0, 175) Jr. WR/DB, Jamillion Womble (6-2, 190) Sr. ATH, Benji Valdes (6-0, 200) Sr. RB/DL

Season outlook: It will be a season of change for the Warriors as Campbell and his revamped staff implement new offensive and defensive schemes as they try to shake off a forgettable 2020 season.

Gone is the wing-T, and in its place is a more pass-friendly spread offense that new coordinator Kraig Campbell hopes will take advantage of a strong group of skill players – including Gott, Valdez, Womble, Gabe Helton and Chase Rizzo – while also getting more out of an experienced line led by all-region players Blankenship and Frady.

The early returns in camp were positive.

“The kids have really enjoyed learning the new offense,” Campbell said. “It’s going to be fun for them because Coach K likes to spread it out and get the ball to the athletes. We’re going to throw it around quite a bit, and right now I feel if we’re consistent and can execute, we’ll move the ball well.”

Who gets to be the trigger man of the new attack was still to be decided as Carroll, who started several games last year, and former receiver Keenan Walker battled it out. Carroll, if he doesn’t start at quarterback, will still play on offense in addition to helping anchor the linebackers.

“We missed Will last year at linebacker because we had to keep him safe,” Campbell said. “He’s one of our best athletes, so he’ll play a lot regardless of where he starts offensively.”
