Pastor Bo: The imperfect perfection of church

He grinned at me, a huge, ear-to-ear kind of thing and pointed at the words on his shirt.

It was during an invitation, mind you, when everyone was supposed to have their heads bowed and their eyes closed. This little boy, though, wanted to send me a message. It is pretty hard to keep your voice from cracking in laughter when you are speaking in solemn terms of eternity, and the decision people need to make in that moment, and a boy with a snaggle-toothed grin is letting you know: “I’m not lazy, I just really like not doing anything!”

Great shirt that, but what a moment to point to it.

There are certain things that seem to only happen in church. I was preaching a revival out near the coast some years ago, and, right in the middle of my message, found myself engrossed in a living cellphone commercial. A phone rang in the midst of the audience. Most people at that moment frantically grab for it, shut if off with lighting speed and act as if it must have been someone else. But not this fellow.

He answered the phone – loudly – in the middle of my preaching. Worse still, the connection must not have been good, because he began to move about in the aisles and pews saying, “Can you hear me now? How about now? Can you hear me now?” I had to stop what I was doing and wait for him to wander outside searching for better signal before I could continue.
