KNOXVILLE – University of Tennessee, Knoxville, students are commemorating the birthday of Charles Darwin with a four-day celebration.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports the celebration includes giant puppets, talks on evolution and a birthday party at the McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture hosted by Monty, the museum’s resident dinosaur.

Sarah Sheffield is a Ph.D. student at UT who is one of the lead organizers. She said UT’s first Darwin Day celebration took place in 1997, making it one of the oldest of such events in the country.

Sheffield said students organize the event to dispel misinformation about evolution and to help others, including children, enjoy science.

The celebration begins Monday. A full list of speakers and events is available at www.DarwinDayTN.org.
