Historical marker planned for Shelbyville square

SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. – A historical marker may be added to the Shelbyville public square.

The marker will read: “Shelbyville was established in 1810 on 100 acres of land donated by Clement Cannon (1782-1860). The city was named in honor of General Isaac Shelby (1750-1826), noted Revolutionary War hero who led colonial forces to victory at King’s Mountain. The town was formally chartered on October 7, 1819.”

According to the Shelbyville Times-Gazette, the marker was suggested by the Bedford County Historical Society.

Officials said they hope to install it before Shelbyville’s Bicentennial celebration set for July 17.
