Drivers using too many lights

Drivers using too many lights

This is my wish list for Christmas and all year long.

I wish people who drive at night would dim their headlights in traffic.

I wish people would not use two sets of headlights. Please turn off one set.

Save a life — maybe your own.

To whom does GOP pledge allegiance?

Sen. Corker, Dec. 2, email update “Failure of Deficit Reduction Committee a ‘National Disgrace.’ “

Is it? I believe Mr. Corker is the disgrace. This is especially true by his referencing military veterans to bolster his position. “Throughout our history Americans have sent our citizens throughout the world to shed blood in defense of preserving democracy.” As a veteran, I took an oath to defend our great nation. As a congressman, Mr. Corker did as well.

The most important part of that oath is pledging allegiance to our nation, our entire nation. Mr. Corker and many of his GOP colleagues, however, have made an entirely different pledge. They have pledged allegiance not to the American people but to whom Speaker Boehner calls a “random citizen,” Mr. Grover Norquist.

According to Mr. Norquist, “I don’t want to abolish government. I simply want to reduce it to the size where I can drag it into the bathroom and drown it in the bathtub.” (“NPR’s Morning Edition,” May 25, 2001.)

These are treasonous remarks. And to think, 95 percent of all Republican lawmakers have signed on. To whom have they pledged their allegiance?

Adding lies not new for Gingrich

Newt (Gingrich) looks serious when he says he won’t lie to us or change positions for political gain. He admits he’s lied for love, and we all know he lies about his money, so adding politics to the pile isn’t too much of a stretch. We here in Georgia have known Newt for a long time and have found out over the years that if his lips are moving, he’s probably lying.

This field of Republican candidates for president reminds me of the arsonist who joins the fire department. The policies they advocate have burned down our economy, and now they ask us to hire one of them to put out the fire. In their twisted universe, it’s fair game to use lawyers, lobbyists and loopholes to avoid taxes, but they would do away with the earned income credit that helps poor people. Go figure.

I hope in their time of need, the cold, clammy embrace of a Grover Norquist is their only comfort. Merry Christmas.

Kids’ program not a liability

I find it remarkable that the Chattanooga Housing Authority officials would label the community service work being done by Ms. Josephine Wortham’s Club Jesus program a liability.

Webster’s College Dictionary defines liability as “something disadvantageous,” so to label Club Jesus a liability is nonsense. To dismantle a program that has proven to be effective, the consequences would be disastrous for the entire community, and in particular for the children.
