Former McCallie School standout Turner Voges is returning to his hometown to use his last year of college tennis eligibility as a graduate student at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He graduated from Memphis last month after helping win two tournament doubles championships last year with the Tigers. “We are excited to add Turner to the roster for next year,” UTC coach Chuck Merzbacher said in a school web post last week. “Obviously he is a talented tennis player, but more importantly he is a great kid and he’ll fit in well into our program. He is local, from a great tennis family, and he knows a lot of the guys on the team already. With five of our top six returning, we are encouraged by the depth he will add to our team.”

» Sewanee men’s soccer coach Tony Pacella recently announced nine recruits for the 2019 season. They represent seven Southern states, New Mexico and Zimbabwe. “The incoming class is arguably the deepest and most talented group since my arrival at Sewanee (in 2014). Players from some of the top club and high school programs in the country are comprised in this group,” Pacella said in a Sewanee web post. “I have to give a lot of credit to assistant coach Patrick Bain. He has worked tirelessly recruiting these young men, and his hard work has definitely paid off.” The Zimbabwe native is 5-foot-10 forward Tashinga Vhumisai, who played at Franklin Road Academy. Also from a Tennessee school is 5-9 center midfielder Christian Kirk from Knoxville Catholic, the News Sentinel 2018 player of the year. The other new Tigers are 5-8 center midfielder Mencken Camp from Spartanburg, South Carolina; 5-10 forward Bryan Franklin from Griffin, Georgia; 6-foot all-state and four-time club state champion goalkeeper JP Furman from Mandeville, Louisiana; 6-1 defender Patrick O’Neill from Cary, North Carolina; 5-11 midfielder Grant Shepherd from Virginia Beach; 6-1 all-state defender Zach Shunnarah from Birmingham; and 6-foot all-state forward Matthew Hunter from Santa Fe, who led New Mexico’s 5A class with 29 goals as a senior and totaled 76 goals and 31 assists for his high school career.
