After writing last week about backsliding during this Shape We’re In dieting project, a couple of readers e-mailed that I sounded discouraged. Not really discouraged, I answered, more like disgusted with myself.

Whenever I get a steady weekly loss pattern going, I think, “Well, I’ve got some wiggle room now” and lapse back into old habits … which almost always results in a gain the next week.

Why do we shoot ourselves in the foot like this?

I asked that question of Tabi Upton, whose column is on the other side of this Life page. She’s a licensed counselor at Richmont/CBI Counseling Center on McCallie Avenue. I read her each week because I love her insight into human behavior.

I asked Tabi if this problem was rooted in some kind of self-image problem. And what does it say about somebody who sabotages their own good intentions?
