ATLANTA — Forecasters say a system of severe thunderstorms could pelt parts of north and central Georgia with hail and cause wind damage.

The National Weather Service issued severe thunderstorm watches and warnings covering most of north and central Georgia Tuesday evening. Atlanta, Athens, Rome, Columbus, Macon and other areas are included in the warning area.

Forecasters say storms in some parts of the state could bring winds of up to 60 mph, which could damage homes, trees and more. Officials are also warning of large hail and frequent lightning.

The storms approached Georgia after forecasters issued advisories warning of heat indexes as high as 105 degrees in some areas.
