Jasmine McClendon, Miss Spring City for 2009, has spent the year handing out awards, reading to children and visiting the elderly.
“The best part about being Miss Spring City this past year has been meeting all the new people in the community,” she said. “I really enjoyed interacting with the people at the nursing home and the children at the library.”
Jim Reed, president of the Spring City Chamber of Commerce, said Miss McClendon has been very dedicated in her role representing Spring City and promoting the community.
“She has truly been involved in our community to the fullest extent from awarding trophies at a car show to reading to the children at the library,” he said.
But now it’s time for her to put down the tiara.
The Chamber is accepting applications for its 2010 Miss Spring City Scholarship Pageant, set for March 27. The pageant offers a $1,000 scholarship to the winner, who will represent Spring City throughout the year and participate in a variety of community events.
Spring City area residents from birth to 18 years old who are zoned to Spring City schools are eligible to participate in one of the pageant’s seven categories.
The winner in each category will receive a crown, trophy, sash and flowers. In addition, Miss Spring City will receive a $1,000 scholarship to be used at the school of her choice, the Junior Miss winner will receive a $100 cash award and the Young Miss winner will receive a $50 cash award.
First runner-up and second runner-up will receive a trophy in each category, and all participants 9 years old and under will receive gift bags.
Past winners of the pageant are invited to attend, too.
“We are planning a presentation of past Miss Spring City winners with photos then and (you can) see them now when they attend the event,” Chamber business manager Nancy Miller said.
Rules and entry forms are available at the Spring City Chamber of Commerce, Bailey Reed Motors, Baldwin Realty or www.springcitychamberofcommerce.com.
The deadline to enter is March 18. For more information, visit the Web site or call 423-365-5210.
