Magee: Working while on vacation

The saying goes that in this day of advanced technology and connectivity, a person can work from just about anywhere.

For the most part that’s true, and I’ve got years of experience to prove it. For instance, I once wrote four pages of a book on a cell phone in a car via text message while someone else drove, meeting a deadline. It wasn’t even a so-called smart phone.

It was a pretty dumb idea, as my thumbs hurt for days afterward, but it got the job done.

Another time I was in Japan for a meeting and was told I needed business cards that I didn’t have. The meeting was in 30 minutes. No problem, they said. Just send an e-mail to this place around the corner and they’ll have them ready in time. Twenty minutes later I picked them up, distributing the cards per request at the meeting.

Such ease can be deceiving, however.
