Greg Martin is best choice for commission

My family and I support Greg Martin for the County Commission race for District 3 for many reasons, but ultimately we feel he is the best man for the job because of his character.

He is a man we trust to do the right thing and would be so glad to see him win the race for District 3.

He is exactly what the citizens of Hixson need because he will make decisions from a heart of doing what is best for the people.

Elect Joe Smith to District 3 seat

While now in retirement several hundred miles from Chattanooga, I was still quite excited to hear that my friend and colleague of many years, Joe Smith, had decided to run for the District 3 seat on the Hamilton County Commission. What an incredible difference he will make!

For a number of years I served in a counseling position at McCallie School. At the beginning of my tenure, I interviewed Joe for a position as a drug/alcohol educator. It took me only one interview to know he was the man for the job. Being in recovery himself, his credibility with our students was profound.

Equally important was his servant’s heart, especially for adolescents. He and his wife, Paula, have demonstrated their giving spirit by having fostered a number of adolescents in their home as they raised their own wonderful children.

It is my joy and pleasure to endorse Joe Smith for the District 3 seat on the Hamilton County Commission.

GOP should turn to military leader

The GOP drafting a military leader for president of the United States is the best choice. We need someone with integrity and good leadership.

We’re not helpless or hopeless yet. The GOP drafted a military leader, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, as its presidential candidate in 1952.

No leader has ever been perfect, as you well know. King David, a warrior and a man after God’s own heart, stumbled with Bathsheba. Yet God forgave, restored and used him again for his service. While we shouldn’t condone wrongdoing, we all mess up sometime during our lives.

So I urge those of us with computer skills to get on our computers and encourage our friends to do so. Contact your GOP, and ask that the party consider drafting a man with a military background as a leader and president for our country.

We need to pull together.

Bigotry in state vote law changes?

I considered if a state was engaging in gerrymandering before moving to Tennessee. The state’s hands appeared to be clean. I made the move. I don’t support bigotry and racism.

Now I’m here in Chattanooga, and I see my new home state has joined more than a dozen Southern states enacting laws making it harder for blacks and other minorities to register and vote.

The state passed a law in 2011 reducing early voting days. It restricted registration rules and requires specific identification, costing time to acquire.

What’s next, Tennessee, purging voter rolls of names that sound black or Hispanic, like Florida?
