CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The teacher gave the student a stern lesson about tournament basketball.
John Shulman’s Mocs pounded former UTC assistant, Charlton Young, and his Georgia Southern squad 82-62 in the first round of the Southern Conference tournament on Saturday.
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga followed Shulman’s principles of defense, rebounding, and scoring in the paint while bruising through an athletic team that prefers to run and gun.
UTC (15-17) scored a season-high 54 points in the paint to counter-act 24 turnovers. The Mocs out-rebounded GSU 49-20 after having a 45-12 advantage at one point. And they limited GSU (9-23) to 22-of-64 from the floor while shooting 66.7 percent themselves.
