Tennessee Temple University soccer coach Kenrick Liburd got the goalkeeper he wanted Wednesday when Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe’s Greg Burton signed to play for him this fall.
Burton has seven shutouts for the 9-2 Warriors this season and has had a goals-against average of “about 1” for his career, LFO coach Jonathan Schneider said.
“He has incredible talents. He’s an incredible goal-stopper, he’s fearless and he communicates well,” Schneider said. “And he’s an excellent leader and plays with his heart.”
Burton’s grandfather, a preacher, went to Temple.
“I figured I’d follow in his footsteps,” said Burton, who said he also had contact with Lee, Southern Polytechnic and Bryan. “And I just like the atmosphere there.”
Liburd said he had been watching Burton for two years.
“I feel he’s one of the best goalkeepers in the region, and he’s a good Christian kid,” Liburd said.
“He’s 6-foot or 6-1 and has long arms and sees the ball well. I love his length; I love his athleticism; I love his concentration. He’s got the body type and the skills to be successful straightaway at the collegiate level.”
