Weather forecasters said the Chattanooga area will see a light White Christmas and cold weather today.
And people in Southeast Tennessee who love cold weather will get an ample supply over the next few days, forecasters said.
While the scenery will be nice for some, the gentle accumulation of white stuff likely will make some roads a safety hazard.
David Hotz, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Morristown, Tenn., said there was a winter weather advisory out for Southeast Tennessee, including Chattanooga, that started midnight Friday and lasts until noon today.
“Some less-traveled roads could get some snow,” Hotz said. “There could be some slippery conditions. Again this is going to be a very light accumulation, but sometimes they can pose a problem for travel.”
WRCB-TV Channel 3 storm alert meteorologist Nick Austin predicted a mix of snow and rain for around 3 to 4 a.m. this morning that would turn into a light snow. He said the Chattanooga area could expect half an inch to an inch of snow in the valley and maybe up to 2 inches in the mountains.
Austin said temperatures will hover in the mid-30s through Monday, and there will be more light snow showers and flurries Sunday.
“It won’t really start to get warmer until about midweek,” Austin said. “Some spots might get to 50 on Wednesday. We’ll see highs back into the upper 40s for Wednesday, which is pretty close to normal.”
