A Chattanooga panel on Thursday approved a painted sign on the outside of the Edney Building that’s more than twice the size allowed by the city code.

The sign, which says “The Edney,” already had been painted a month ago on the outside of the Market and East 11th streets building without earlier approval from the city’s Form-Based Code Committee.

Jill Allen of Urban Story Ventures, which manages the building, said “The Edney” sign was mistakenly put on while the structure was being painted before gaining proper approval from the city.

“It was a big snafu,” she told the panel about the sign on the building, which is seen as the center of the city’s Innovation District.

The painted sign, located at the top of the 11-story building, is 656 square feet in size, while the city code permits just 300 square feet.
