THIS WEEK IN EDUCATION NEWS
Tomorrow is the big day – at least for Hamilton County commissioners and school board members.
The commission is expected to vote on Mayor Jim Coppinger’s proposed FY 2020 budget and a 34-cent property tax rate increase to fund public education.
“This is a local issue. Not a Republican issue. It’s not a Democrat issue. It’s not a conservative issue. It’s not a liberal issue,” Coppinger said. “It’s our county’s issue. It’s our community. If you’re not satisfied with where we are, we’ve got to get some more resources into the classroom.”

- Hundreds of volunteers came out to clean lockers, paint walls, pull down rotting chalkboards and more during the Brainerd Together renovation project at Brainerd High School;
- Dozens of educators gathered in the district’s 16 Volkswagen eLabs to learn digital fabrication skills and how to engage their students in learning;
- Nearly 100 students joined Public Education Foundation staff at Sewanee: University of the South for three days to learn about the college admissions process and meet with mentors,
- And the Hamilton County school board debated the importance of voluntary pre-kindergarten and the district’s role in providing early childhood education.
