Editor’s note: Barry Courter has a 26-year-old son who is a college graduate and a 21-year-old daughter who is a senior in college. Each week he poses a question he wishes they would ask.

Q: Dad, we did a lot of select, or travel, sports when we were growing up. Do you think it was worth it?

A: The short answer is yes, because you learned a lot of really valuable life lessons, like how to compete at a high level, work hard, avoid excuses and handle your own business. You can do that in other, less-expensive ways, of course, but sports worked for you guys.
