Soccer
-UTC takes a 1-0 record into its women’s soccer game today at 2 p.m. at Finley Stadium against Eastern Kentucky after edging one of the Colonels’ Ohio Valley Conference rivals, Austin Peay, at Finley on Friday night. The 3-2 victory was a good performance by the team and an outstanding one for Jordan Mueller, who had two goals and the assist on Catherine Meyer’s deciding score. Mueller made the All-Southern Conference freshman team last year. “We started off with a win. That’s fantastic,” Mocs coach Gavin McKinney said in a UTC release. “I thought there were moments in the game where we were quite good. We looked dangerous off the counterattack, which is where two of our goals came from.” Specifically of Mueller, he added, “We converted Jo into a center forward last spring. We thought she had a knack for getting in the right area in the box. She scored four goals last year as a center mid(fielder), and she’s getting better every day. She and Chloe (Arnold) are a handful up there. Great start for Jo.” Meyer was playing for the first time since recovering from an ACL injury. Her goal from a Mueller cross in the 58th minute gave the Mocs a 3-1 lead. The Governors scored four minutes later but then the UTC defense held. “Defensively, I thought the girls worked extremely hard for each other,” McKinney said in the release. “Team spirit was phenomenal, particularly at the end. They were stepping out to block shots and doing whatever it took to win the game.” As with all UTC soccer games, there is no charge for attending today’s contest.
