We are resigned to the strident liberalism of the most powerful member of the U.S. Senate, Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. But even Reid “outdid himself” with some racially tinged remarks about Hispanics and Republicans.
He cynically tried to stir up Hispanic voters against his GOP challenger, Sharron Angle.
“I don’t know how anyone of Hispanic heritage could be a Republican,” Reid said while pushing so-called “comprehensive immigration reform” that would give amnesty to millions of illegal aliens.
In fact, there are excellent reasons why American Hispanics might choose to vote Republican.
For instance, it is not only white- or black- or Asian-owned businesses but Hispanic-owned businesses as well that benefit from the lower taxes and reduced government spending that many Republicans advocate. A quick look around Chattanooga and the surrounding region reveals plenty of thriving, Hispanic-owned small businesses that employ many people – but that will be able to hire fewer people if Democrats’ tax increase plans become a reality.
Republicans also generally favor firm law enforcement, which benefits law-abiding Hispanic families and companies in the urban areas where many live or conduct business.
We freely acknowledge that illegal aliens who are Hispanic or who are members of any other race have reason to hope for Democrat victories in Congress, since Republicans usually (though not always) call for tougher enforcement of our immigration laws.
But those who have not broken the law to come to this country have a number of fine reasons to consider more conservative candidates.
