Tennessee: DeVol endorses Irion in 3rd District race

Independent candidate Mark DeVol has endorsed attorney Van Irion in the Republican primary for the 3rd District congressional seat.

Mr. DeVol said Mr. Irion is “the Republican to vote for” in the primary, according to a press release from Mr. Irion’s campaign.

The race is for the seat long held by U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp, R-Tenn., who is leaving to run for governor.

Mr. DeVol said he would withdraw from the race if Mr. Irion wins the primary. If he does not win, Mr. DeVol said he would continue to run as an independent.

“Van Irion has indicated he will be a limited constitutional candidate,” Mr. DeVol said, adding that he does not trust the Republican nor the Democratic Party.

The Republican primary is Aug. 5.

The other Republican candidates are former state GOP Chairwoman Robin Smith, Chattanooga attorney Chuck Fleischmann, businessman Art Rhodes, Bradley County Sheriff Tim Gobble, businessman Tommy Crangle, educator/consultant Jean Howard-Hill and Rick Kernea, a former Air Force captain, among others.
