Nearly 100 years after it was built, the South Stadium building at Chamberlain Field is coming down.
The condemned building in the heart of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga campus, built in 1914, will be “dismantled” as soon as UTC is given the OK to do so, Dr. Richard Brown, vice chancellor for finance and operations, said Monday.
Brown said UTC is waiting for its request to go forward with the project to be approved by the Tennessee Historical Commission. That decision should come in the next few weeks, he added.
The plan, Brown said, is to preserve some aspects of the building, such as the archways, and incorporate them into the design of the green space, which will retain the name Chamberlain Field, in front of the new library.
“What we hope to do is remove parts of it — the historic parts of the structure — and then rebuild, using those same elements, a gateway to Chamberlain Field that celebrates the history of that field,” Brown said.
