In spite of above-average rainfall this winter, roadway projects are moving along, according to County Commissioner Sabrena Smedley.

During a community meeting last week at Morris Hill Baptist Church, Smedley and Councilman Larry Grohn addressed resident concerns regarding traffic and roadwork.

Widening along East Brainerd Road is now 17.7 percent complete to date, Smedley said.

“Installation is in progress now,” she said. “Water, gas, utility pole installation I am told that we are still on track for that project to be completed in 2017.”

Futher along is the Apison Pike widening project, which is now 50.1 percent completed.

“I’m very thrilled that this is happening during my tenure,” she said.

However, Grohn said, to accomodate the area’s rapid growth, there are three main areas still in need of structural improvement.

“We have a lot of things that we are doing well but we need to be focused on people and infrastructure projects. We want a lot but we have limited resources so I think we need to get Igou Gap, Morris Hill and Davidson Road,” he told residents. “I think then we could be prepared for what’s coming.”

To report roadway issues or any other concerns, Grohn encouraged residents across the area to call 311.
