Hamilton County and Chattanooga residents can now receive emergency updates from the 911 center via phone or e-mail.
The system, started last week, allows county residents to register their street address, phone number and e-mail with the 911 center.
In the event of a life-threatening emergency in their area or countywide, the registered user will receive a message and follow-up instructions on what to do, said Don Allen, director of the Hamilton County Office of Emergency Services and Homeland Security.
Hamilton County Mayor Claude Ramsey announced the system this morning in a press conference at the 911 center on Amnicola Highway.
The announcement is considered the start of a yearlong campaign to spread awareness of the service and build registered users.
