North River Civic Center celebrates its birthday

The North River Civic Center is celebrating its 10th birthday, and the staff invites the community to celebrate, too.

The community center is hosting an open house event Tuesday, Dec. 2 starting at 11:30 a.m. There will be finger foods, music by the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera String Quartet as well as opportunities to hear from local leaders.

“This is a celebration to say ‘thank you’ to the community for their support throughout the 10 years we’ve been here and to recognize the people who started it,” said NRCC Manager Linda Rugina. “It’s also an open house [for the public] to get to know what programs we offer.”

A little more than 10 years ago, a committee met with the purpose of creating a community center for the Hixson, Soddy-Daisy, Red Bank areas and beyond.

“It was a means of pulling communities together,” said board of directors member Denton Ridge.

Since then, the center, which is owned and operated by the city of Chattanooga, has provided regular activities and programs to the community, including line dancing, bridge, bingo, painting and drawing classes, yoga, computer literacy and a free concert series.

“It’s promoted performing and visual arts,” said Ridge.

“It’s provided both an avenue and an opportunity for those things and it’s convenient,” added board Chairman Barry Evans.

Rugina said the center is also available to rent for wedding receptions, family reunions, car shows and more.

“We’re a lively group and we do it right,” said original board member June Cooper. “We love the community and are always encouraging people to come.”
