Gov. Nixon declines to stop Missouri execution

BONNE TERRE, Mo. (AP) – Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has denied an inmate’s clemency request, clearing the way for the state’s record 10th execution of the year.

Nixon’s office announced the denial early Wednesday morning, several minutes after 48-year-old Paul Goodwin was scheduled to be put to death. Earlier, the Supreme Court denied two appeals.

Goodwin was condemned for killing 63-year-old Joan Crotts inside her St. Louis County home in 1998.
