SPRING ARBOR TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) – Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson says he welcomes immigrants to America but, “they don’t get to change who we are.”

Speaking at a university in his native Michigan Wednesday, Carson said the U.S. is “Judeo-Christian.” He says he has “no interest in being like everyone else and giving away all of our values and principles for the sake of political correctness.”

Carson has blamed political correctness for the fallout over his recent statement against electing a Muslim president. He later said he would be open to a moderate Muslim who denounces radical Islam as a presidential candidate.

The retired neurosurgeon, who grew up in Detroit, spoke at Spring Arbor University, a Christian college. He has been among the leading GOP contenders in some recent polls.
