Editor’s note: Barry Courter has a 26-year-old son who is a college graduate and a 22-year-old daughter who is a college senior. Each week he poses a question he wishes they would ask.

Q: If I’m thinking of changing jobs, what should I look for in the interview?

A: You want to go up, not sideways or backward with your new job. Write down the things you have at your current job regarding salary, benefits, vacation days and hours, including flexibility regarding lunches, doctor appointments, nights or weekends and if your day-to-day schedule is fluid or rigid. If you like having a flexible schedule and the new one isn’t, it could be a problem. Ask lots of questions.
